Project Sign

The U.S. Air Force establishes Project Sign — the first official government program to investigate UFO reports. Its classified 'Estimate of the Situation' reportedly concluded some UFOs were interplanetary, but the document was ordered destroyed by Air Force Chief of Staff General Hoyt Vandenberg.

1952

Project Blue Book

Project Blue Book becomes the Air Force's official public-facing UFO investigation program. Over 17 years it catalogued 12,618 sightings, officially explaining all but 701 as 'unknowns.' Critics argued the program was designed to debunk rather than investigate.

1969

Blue Book Terminated

Following the Condon Report — a University of Colorado study funded by the Air Force — Project Blue Book is officially terminated. The report concluded UFOs posed no national security threat and warranted no further study. Numerous scientists disputed the methodology.

2007

AATIP Established

The Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) is secretly established within the Defense Intelligence Agency with $22 million in funding. The program, championed by Senator Harry Reid, investigated UAP incidents and produced classified reports on advanced aerospace threats.

2017

NYT Disclosure

The New York Times publishes a landmark investigation revealing the existence of AATIP and releasing the Nimitz FLIR footage. Former program director Luis Elizondo goes public, stating the U.S. government had confirmed UAP with extraordinary flight characteristics.

2020

Pentagon Confirms Videos

The Department of Defense officially releases three UAP videos — FLIR1, Gimbal, and GoFast — confirming they are authentic recordings of 'unidentified aerial phenomena.' This marks the first time the U.S. government officially acknowledged UAP footage as genuine.

2021

UAP Task Force Report

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence releases a preliminary assessment on UAP, acknowledging 144 incidents reported by U.S. government sources between 2004 and 2021. The report states that most remain unexplained and may represent a flight safety or national security concern.

2022

AARO Established

Congress establishes the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) within the Department of Defense as the official UAP investigation body. AARO is tasked with detecting, identifying, and attributing UAP across all domains — air, sea, land, space, and undersea.

2023

Grusch Testimony

Former intelligence official David Grusch testifies under oath before Congress, claiming the U.S. government has recovered craft of non-human origin and that a secret, unauthorized reverse-engineering program has been concealed from congressional oversight for decades.

Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Implications on National Security, Public Safety, and Government Transparency

Three witnesses — David Grusch, Ryan Graves, and David Fravor — testified under oath. Grusch alleged a secret UAP retrieval and reverse-engineering program. Fravor described the 2004 Nimitz encounter. Graves reported ongoing UAP encounters by active-duty pilots. The hearing was the most significant public congressional UAP session in decades.

Unidentified Aerial Phenomena

The first open congressional hearing on UAP in over 50 years. Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence Scott Bray and Under Secretary of Defense Ronald Moultrie testified, acknowledging 400+ UAP reports and showing previously classified footage. Officials stated UAP represented a flight safety and national security concern.

UAP Disclosure and Government Transparency Act

Senators pressed AARO Director Sean Kirkpatrick on the scope of UAP investigations and the agency's access to classified programs. Kirkpatrick acknowledged receiving 'dozens' of reports from individuals claiming knowledge of secret UAP programs, though he stated AARO had found no verifiable evidence of non-human intelligence.

UAP Task Force Preliminary Assessment

Office of the Director of National Intelligence

The first publicly released government assessment of UAP. Covers 144 incidents from 2004–2021, acknowledges 143 remain unexplained, and identifies UAP as a potential national security and flight safety concern.

AARO Historical Record Report, Volume 1

All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office

AARO's review of U.S. government UAP programs since 1945. The report acknowledges numerous programs but states no verifiable evidence of non-human intelligence or extraterrestrial materials was found. Critics noted the report relied on self-reporting from the same agencies under scrutiny.

Project Blue Book Special Report No. 14

U.S. Air Force

A statistical analysis of 3,201 UFO cases. The report found that the better the quality of the report, the more likely the case was to remain 'unknown' — a finding that contradicted the official narrative that unknowns were simply poorly documented cases.

Wilson-Davis Memo

Alleged: Admiral Thomas Wilson

A leaked document purportedly recording a conversation between Admiral Thomas Wilson and astrophysicist Eric Davis, in which Wilson describes being denied access to a classified UAP reverse-engineering program. Authenticity disputed but not definitively disproven.
